Improving home safety: Gates and fences

Secure the perimeter! Not necessary in all homes, but a impenetrable fence and gate is often a great place to start improving your safety. Not only will you keep burglars out but also children and pets in.

A good fence and gate system will help - anything that's difficult to climb over (whether it's height or has sharp, pointy teeth on top) will deter burglars. Usually a safe perimeter of your house is only effective if it's consistent, so if you have a great fence on 3 sides but 1 is just a picket fence, you're wasting your time (unless your neighbour has the other three sides too!).

If you have a large property you may need an intercom system (whether it's a voice or a video, both are good) but of course if you're going to have that then automatic gates are also a must. Automatic gates are a fantastic security benefit - many crimes (both burglary and hijacking) happen when you're out of your car opening the gate.
