I am starting to renovate my home, and I would like some general interior decorating advice. My style is informal. I prefer the lived-in casual look, but I want to upgrade what I've got. I have some ideas, but I need others. I would like you to take a look at what I've done so far, rearrange it, make suggestions, and recommend whether and how to do certain decorating jobs like modernising the inside brick walls and timber architraves of my 1980s double brick house.

I booked Jan Carter to come to the house for interior decorating advice. I was happy to pay her fee, even though I was getting two service providers to do an initial consultation. I let both of them know that there would be competition for the job. I thought Jan's telephone voice was a little frosty, but decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. I had to ring her back to swap the appointment from afternoon to morning because a school appointment on the same day had been changed and there was nothing I could do about it. I met the other interior decorator the day before my appointment with Jan, and immediately hit it off with her. Wanting to save Jan the trip and save myself the fee, I rang Jan that night to cancel. Her exact response was, "You've already changed our appointment once. You've wasted my time." I thought it was a very unprofessional thing to say, especially considering the other decorator had sent me a lengthy email before her consultation asking more details of the job so that she could come better prepared, while Jan had done no preparation visible to me beforehand. As soon as she made her condescending remark, I knew I'd made the right decision.
