Yellow Pages CEO Resigns

Bruce Akhurst, the long time CEO of Sensis, has resigned today.

Amid bleak results and a shrinking business model, the CEO of Sensis (owner of the Yellow Pages) has resigned. Bruce Akhurst has been a long time Telstra employee with 15 years of service. Mr Akhurst was appointed the CEO of Sensis in 2005 during the transition Telstra CEO transition from Ziggy Switkowski to Sol Trujillo.

During his reign as CEO Bruce Akhurst oversaw the decline of Yellow Pages print revenues as small businesses abandoned the printed Yellow Pages books in favour of online advertising.

Bruce Akhurst was also unable to successfully transition Yellow Pages into an online advertising powerhouse. A Goldman Sachs analyst has reported that their share of the online advertising market has shrunk from 45% in 2005-2006 to just 25% in 2009-2010.

Sensis has not named who will replace Bruce Akhurst as CEO of Sensis. Rick Ellis the chief of Telstra's new media division will hold the reins whilst they look for a new Sensis CEO.

  • Rude reps who just assume that you are going to accept a 10% increase in charges every year probably has something to do with people abandoning this service in droves.

  • YP is a concept whose time peaked in the 90s and started to wane from 2000 onwards. Advertisers don't need a YP-type aggregation which tends to help buyers see the whole gamut of competitors in a category rather than help focus a buyer towards a particular advertiser's solution or offering. YP has always been a way to help customers see where you stand in your chosen category. It has little relevance to modern marketing techniques.

  • Not to mention the proportion of the advertising fee that went to frivolously paying so called foreign consultants that took 5 yrs to deliver an incomplete system which was initially planned for 2 yrs. Cost to Australians - well over 500 million, 80% of which was sent abroad.
