Tired of feeling a draught in winter? Weather-sealing your door can stop draughts and also help you to save on heating costs. Plus it’s simple enough that you can do it yourself in less than a day.
Start by purchasing some self-adhesive foam weatherstripping. You’ll also potentially need a sweep as well, for the bottom of the door. Then get to and clean the surfaces you plan on adding the stripping to with warm, soapy water. Once clean, ensure it dries completely.
Test that the hinges are tight by lifting the door via the door handle. If the door is loose, tighten the top hinges - you may just find this helps solve your draught problem!
Next cut the foam to size, remembering to measure twice, cut once. You’ll want the foam to fit snug along the top and sides of the door in the stop moulding.
Once you’re happy with the lengths, peel back the foam and press it into the stop moulding. It will stick instantly so make sure you place it smoothly and straight.
Lastly install the door sweep. You’ll need to cut it to size and position it so the sweep is just touching the floor. Test that the door still opens and closes easily before firmly tightening the screws.
There you have it - no more draughty doors!
