Being an expensive feature in any home or office it is extremely that carpet is properly cared for to extend its usage. Increased life of carpets can be ensured with proper care - frequent cleaning being the most important facet for ensuring just that.
There is a number of ways to get carpets cleaned, and most will deal with those pesky stains you have been worried about. Some of the most effective domestic and industrial carpet cleaning methods are presented below:
In-house Techniques:
1. Thorough Vacuuming:
Proper vacuuming helps in removing dust and dirt from carpets giving them a clean and bright look. In today’s market you have a wide range of machines to choose from and it only makes sense to go for the best, a high powered machine with a good warranty will not only outlast cheaper machines but will take better care of your carpets. It is advisable to formulate a weekly schedule for performing vacuum on your carpeted area, how often you vacuum will depend on how often it is walked on, do you have children, pets etc. An organized approach towards vacuuming i.e. once every second day; is known to be more effective than a response driven vacuum spree whenever you notice a dirty area / stain.
2. Stain Removal:
Stain removal involves many traditional methods as well as some modern chemical cleaners. For instance, candle wax or stuck bubble gum can be removed by placing a towel on the affected part and applying heat either with the iron or using a hair drier untill the wax is completely absorbed by the towel or the gum detaches itself from the carpet. Lemon juice has passed the test of times and continues to be a powerful stain remover. However, opting in for lemon juice requires special considerations, and is to be used with extreme care as it has powerful bleaching attributes - you would never want your carpet to fade out. Some chemical cleaners are also available for domestic use, where the cleansing solution is applied on the stain for some time and then removed with a clean cloth or sponge.
3. Dust Elimination:
This classic method of cleaning carpets is still in use where portable / removable car[ets such as rugs are concerned: removing dust is done by literally beating the carpet with a rod or stick. Be sure to cover your face while doing so and it is highly advised to go outside.
Industrial techniques:
1. Deep Shampooing:
Shampooing is of two kinds.
- Rotary shampooing involves constant application of shampoo through a dispenser and scrubbing with a rotary brush. Once properly cleaned, it is followed by a wet vacuum. The few drawbacks of this method are that carpet pile needs to be set properly before drying, otherwise it becomes uneven. Also, once dried, the carpet needs to be thoroughly dry vacuumed to remove the residual detergent particles, otherwise, the carpet tends to get dirty quicker.
- Dry foam shampooing; contrary to it’s name, this method is not completely ‘dry’, instead gets its name from the fact that it uses only 10% of liquid and 90% of air. Instead of applying shampoo directly onto the carpet, the machine first works the shampoo into foam and then applies it on the carpet. Brushes then scrub the carpet followed by wet vacuuming.
2. Encapsulation:
This particular technique involves spraying of a shampoo or detergent, as well as some water absorbing polymers. The shampoo loosens any dust and dirt while the polymer absorbs it and it’s then left behind in form of crystals. The crystals are then vacuumed away. The benefit of this type of carpet cleaning is that the carpet does not need to be dried and can be used immediately afterwards.
3. Dry Compound/Extraction Cleaning:
An absorbent cleaning chemical mix is spread uniformly over the carpet and the carpet is then scrubbed. Once the dirt has been absorbed, it is simply vacuumed away.
4. Bonnet Pad Cleaning:
A chemical cleaner is sprayed over the carpet surface and scrubbed with a machine having absorbing pads called ‘Bonnets’. These pads absorb the dirt by rotating continually. The pads need to be changed regularly and as soon as they get soiled.
5. Hot Water Extraction:
Hot detergent based solution is applied to the carpet with pressure and is extracted immediately with proper equipment. This method involves three steps; preconditioning of heavily soiled areas followed by hot detergent application and finally the rinsing. The downfall of this method is that the carpet needs drying time before use.
