So you’ve had your walls re-plastered and you’re desperate to get on with painting them.
The first thing that you’ve got to remember is that the new plaster must be absolutely dry before you do anything to it at all. Painting on wet plaster doesn’t work. The moisture will escape from the wall and cause your newly applied paint job to flake off. Even if you sand it down and touch up in the flaked areas you can still see where it’s happened, which kind of negates the point of having a professional come and plaster your walls.
The best way to get your plaster to dry out is just to leave it alone. It will dry in its own time. If you’re on a schedule and you need it to dry out quicker, then a dehumidifier will help speed the process up. You can hire dehumidifiers from most hardware stores (as they can be expensive to buy) and make sure you close the doors and windows before switching it on. You want to dry out the room not the entire world.
So the walls are dry and it’s time to paint. Start by taking a hand brush and sweeping down the walls to remove any left over plaster dust. The best thing to do is to use a cheap white emulsion for the first two coats and water it down. Using a 60/40 mix of paint to water works well. Once you've got these base coats on you should be ready to paint any colour you want.
