Tools you'll need for painting, and costs

For a standard internal painting job, here's all the tools you'll need and their costs. We've priced each tool based on the halfway point between eBay's most expensive and cheapest price.

Preparation $10.50

  • Plaster filler for chips and holes $4
  • Spatula for application $1.50
  • Sandpaper $2
  • Sugar soap (to wash the walls in preparation) $3

Total estimation for preparation = $10.50

Painting $102

  • Paint rollers $18.50
  • Paint pan $2
  • Angled trim brush (skirting boards) $7
  • Smaller brush (window and door frames) $5
  • Painting dropsheets (use old sheets if you want to sacrifice them) $2
  • Painters tape $3
  • Paint primer (cost depends on selection and amount required but based on a room 3x4x4, 2 coats, acrylic = 8 litres) $40
  • Paint (cost depends on selection and amount required but based on a room 3x4x4, 1 coat, acrylic = 4 litres) $17 (low cost primer)
  • Turpentine (only if you're using oil based paint) $7 (500 ml)
  • Stirrer, pry bar/screwdriver to open paint cans, old clothes to wear, cleaning materials, respirator or mask for protection against fumes can all be purchased or standard household items used instead.

Total estimation for painting one room of 3 by 4 metres with low cost acrylic paint = $102.

Once you've bought the tools your costs decrease but your rollers and paint brushes may deteriorate over use, especially if you select cheaper versions.
