To renovate your bathroom, first you must destroy it...

So as I might have mentioned, I'm getting a new bathroom. I've picked the fitter, I've picked the shower, I've picked the bath, the floor, the tiles, the taps. I'm really, really excited about it (if you hadn't guessed).

Work started today. I can hear the crashes upstairs at the minute. It's a bit strange to have other people ripping my house to shreds for once, rather than doing it myself. It's even more of a challenge to be sitting downstairs and not be able to go up and see what they're doing every ten minutes, the way that I want to.

Before I got started on the bathroom, I needed to have a new window fitted. The double glazing unit had popped and there was condensation in-between the panes. Also the old window opened at the top, which meant whenever I wanted to open the window I had to stand in the bath to do it. So last week I had the new window fitted. I posted the job online as usual and got a really good quote to do this window and replace a couple of other units that had popped. The new window in here cost me $400.

My old bathroom

I thought I would treat you to some pictures of how my bathroom looked before work started, so you can see what I've been living with for the last year.

The old bathroom was, as you can see, a bit of a mess. The shower had been fitted really badly and I suspect has been leaking water onto the floorboards under the laminate for nearly 10 years. The T&G lining the walls is ugly, the tiling is worse and the plaster is flaking off the walls. I knew when I decided to start on this room it was going to be a huge challenge and that the walls would need to be taken back to the bare brick, the floorboards would need replacing in a couple of areas, the waste stack outside would need replacing, large holes would need to be drilled right through the walls.

I am unbelievably excited about this project. The bathroom fitters have just called me upstairs to show me what they've done so far, and loads has been achieved just this morning. I've taken a couple of pictures of their progress so far. I think Paul (the fitter) thinks that I'm a bit strange, but who cares.

Ripping the old bathroom out

The bath has gone, I am really pleased about this. I hated that bath.

And so has the shower and the stud walls. I'm a bit concerned about the large holes in the wall, but Paul assures me it's completely stable. If you look at the far left hand side of that picture, you can see that yet again we've found what no renovation project in this house would be complete without, the large hole in the floor where the previous owners have decided to pull up the floorboards to get to the pipes underneath and haven't put them back.

I thought I'd show you this as well, where they've taken off the radiator they've uncovered some old 60's wallpaper underneath! I actually think it's quite funky.

Now this is basically going to be my entire bathroom for the next fortnight. A toilet, which doesn't flush unless you throw a bucket of water down it. Fortunately I have lots of friends nearby, whose showers I can borrow and I have the sink in the kitchen for cleaning my teeth and washing my face, but I'm starting to think that this is going to be a really long two weeks.
