Moving can be expensive and come at an inconvenient time (when you've got your bond tied up in two properties or paying through the nose for mortgage fees). Here are some tips to help save and make some money with your move.
Reduce the 'stuff'. Weight equals money (either because you're shipping long distance and are charged by volume, or because your extra stuff takes more time to move). Be strict when deciding what to take with you. Why pay to move something that will collect dust or be used for a clothes horse (stairmaster, anyone?)?
Moving sales. Make extra cash by selling your unwanted items online, or if you've got lots to sell hold a garage sale.
Plan well in advance. The further ahead you plan your move the better chance you’ll have at saving on things like airline tickets and hotels - if these are necessary. Some moving companies have cheaper rates for moving in off-season or during the week too.
Extras you can do yourself. Getting the removalists to pack your stuff up is a MASSIVE relief but comes at a cost. If your budget is tight, consider packing up your belongings yourself - you can often get lovely removalist sized boxes from Dan Murphy's and also your removal company will deliver boxes to you if you order them.
Use clothes as packing material. Don't buy a roll of bubble wrap, just use your clothes, towels, pillows etc. It can make things more voluminous but definitely safe!
Gather a posse. Friends and family at either end of the move are worth their weight in gold and will usually work for tea or beer.
Shop around. Get at least three quotes from reputable removal companies (of course, we can help with that!).
