Tips For A Thirsty Lawn

Has January been leaving your lawn worse for wear? As we approach the height of summer, backyards all around the nation are starting to crumble and yellow - which is unfortunate timing, given just how much time we like to spend hanging out outdoors in the sun. Luckily, though, you have a few tricks up your sleeve before sacrificing your greenery to the garden gods. Here are some tips for looking after your grass in hot dry weather.

1. Water wisely

This is a bit of a no-brainer but you want to give your roots the best chance they’ve got of soaking up all of that much-needed moisture - so don’t let that pesky sun interfere, don’t water during the day. Watering around dawn is popular - if you can’t bring yourself to get up, there’s always automatic sprinklers. A deep occasional water (once or twice a week) will condition your grass to be more drought-resistant.

2. Keep up with the mowing

Apart from the rather unpleasant reptile risk of long grass, keeping your grass relatively high is actually quite useful in summer because it shades the soil, thus preventing evaporation and the germination of weeds, and it allows the grass to grow deeper roots. Nevertheless, make sure to mow frequently rather than in one ambitious push which will likely smother your flailing plant life in its own clippings.

3. Go easy on the product

Fertilisers and pesticides can cause significant damage to weak grass so lay off the extensive treatments. Don’t use them at all on days over 35 degrees. One notable exception is a wetting agent, which can be used to maximise the soil’s potential for water storage.
