Revitalize your Home with the right Curtains and Blinds

Wanting to give your room or house a complete makeover? New curtains and blinds may be all you need - you won't even have to open a tin of paint.

Unless you're an experienced interior designer, however, it can be tricky to get started. Here are some simple tips on what you should consider when choosing new curtains and blinds for your home.

Start with a Design

As with any design project, start with researching what styles, colours, materials and patterns you like. Sketch out your ideas and be happy to ask other people for their ideas and input. Consider the room your redecorating - what mood do you want to create? Once you have an idea of what you like and what you think will suit your room, you're ready to move on to the next step.

Colours and Patterns

Colour and pattern are both very important when it comes to building the mood of your room. Consider how certain colours make you feel, or whether a pattern is traditional or modern. Often cooler colours such as blues, greys and greens can be seen as soothing while warmer reds and yellows can make a house feel cosy. If you want to make a bolder statement use a brighter, stronger colour. Consider the colour of the walls and other furniture in your room, by selecting colours that might accent a wall or piece of furniture you can really add that final touch to your room.

Materials and Texture

There is a massive range of fabrics available for curtains and blinds. The main differences, however, can be found in the thickness of weave; its texture, from silk to velvet; and its durability. Thickness of weave will often determine the material's quality, price, how well it hangs and how effectively it blocks out light. The texture can change the mood of the room from formal to flirty to seductive, it's also important to note that texture will also affect colour as it changes the amount of light reflected. Finally durability refers to the material's ability to withstand the sun. Fabric will often fade or even rot when constantly exposed to direct sunlight.

The Style

What style you choose for your curtains and blinds will help to determine the overall theme for your room. Fancy curtain rods can add a formal, 17th century tone to your room; modern glass blind pulls can add a bold contemporary feel. Consider other elements in your room and how the style of your curtains and blinds might compliment them. You can even experiment with the length of your curtains to create something regal or cosy. There is a huge variety of styles available so remember to do your research and mix and match to find something perfect for you.
