Home Office Hacks for Small Spaces

Whether you’re a solo-preneur or a full-fledged employee who needs to work at home, you need to have a separate space in your house for work. You just can’t concentrate on what you’re doing when you’re sharing the kitchen table with those chopped vegetables or you’re sitting on the floor of your living room. The problem is if you don’t have the luxury of space. What if you’re living in a small flat? Well then, here are surprising home office hacks for small spaces. Feel free to use them.

Make Use of Your Walls

Choose a corner area so that you have two walls surrounding your space. You can have a post-it calendar plastered to it. You can have your inspiration board right in front of you. Just be sure you use tapes which wouldn’t mess up with the paint like washi tapes, for instance.

Use Photoshop for Planning

The picture looks chicly modern, doesn’t it? But, take a closer look. You’d notice the frame is tilted in an odd way and the colors go out of line. That’s because the picture is an illusion. The owner took picture of her existing area and tweaked it. You can borrow her plan.

Play with your office space virtually. You will know how to position your desk and cabinets such that it would still look nice without being crowded. A bonus is that you can play with your theme -- change the colors, add patterns -- and see which is the best look that you like!

Go vertical

If you’re frustrated and left with a slim space on your home, don’t worry. You can still work a small space out. Go vertical. Add layers of shelves and use a simple table. To make up for the small space, try coordinating the shelves, file containers, your table and lamps by painting them all in one color. Give your mini office a nice style. You can put up a curtain to keep it hidden when you’re not using it.

Place your printer or scanner inside a drawer

Now this idea is genius. Placing your printer or scanner inside a drawer wouldn’t just save you space; it will save you time from cleaning the equipment from all those dust. Just make sure to position your equipment in such a way that it would be easy for you to get the printed papers, load the bond papers and change the ink cartridges.

Place your office under the stairs

Got a closet-less space under your stairs? Good! Convert it into your office. Have somebody install a plank of wood  on a comfortable height -- this will serve as your desk. You’ll get this geometric pattern as your bulletin and it will look so cool.

Turn a closet into an office

Chameleon your closet into your work station. Empty out the cabinets and install shelves instead. Get a sturdy desk and place it inside the cabinet. You can even make use of the inside doors as your organizers and pin boards. It’ll be fabulous! The good thing is that you can close the doors when you aren’t working. You can even lock it up just to make sure nobody messes with your papers and office blings.

... or even some furniture

When you visit the hardware, the junk shop or a furniture store next time, keep your eye keen of that style which could double as your secret work station. Ideally, it has to be something with a flat space near your waist when you sit in front of it. It’ll be your desk. You could have shelves on top or below or on the sides. The important thing is it would look like a furniture when you don’t do work on it so you can place it wherever you want in your house and its cover will not be blown off.

Turn your night table into an office table

If you’re sure that the bed can’t seduce you to sleep when you’re working, then you may have your office right inside your bedroom. Place a cabinet under your table, get a comfortable chair, put up some shelves and you’re good to go!

Borrow some space for your office

Look around your house. Is there space near your kitchen? Or between the kitchen and the living room. That would do! Set up your office there. Just match your kitchen’s theme and keep everything organized so it wouldn’t grab unnecessary attention.

Create an office space yourself

If all else fails, thou shall create a space. Find a literal space in your house. Have an open second floor? Well then, get somebody to extend the floor on the space overlooking the ground floor. Or you can create one on top of your bed. Just slide your bed in.
