Common Washing Machine Problems

A list of common reasons why your washing machine might not be working.

No water coming into washing machine

Check the washing machine hoses are not kinked and that the feed taps are turned on. If these are ok, then check to see if the fill valve is making a humming sound. If the fill valve is humming than it may need replacing.

Washing machine's water is not emptying

Check whether the washing machine's filter is blocked, or its waste pipe blocked. If these are ok, the washing machine's pump may have a bad connection or need replacing.

If the water is clear, it means that the fill valve is letting by and the machine needs a new valve. If the water is dirty, it means the waste pipe is blocked. Also, you should also check the grey waste pipe for blockages.

Washing machine not spinning

Motor brushes may be worn and need replacing.

Loose concrete weight.

Can you move the stainless steel drum up and down? If so, then the bearings have gone. Replace bearings.

Washing machine has a rattling noise on spin

Coins or buttons stuck between inner and outer tubs of the machine. Remove pump and tip the washing machine towards the pump and the cause of the rattling should come out.

Washing machine sticks shortly after initial fill

Washing machines commonly wait whilst the water is brought up to the correct temperature. If the machine's heater is not working, the water will not get up to temperature and will not start its cycle.

Washing machine's second cold valve is not opening. On many washing machines there is a mechanical arm that diverts water to the conditioner tray. Check that this arm is moving or change complete twin valve.
