5 Hints For Deep-Cleaning The Bathroom

Starting to notice the beginnings of some nasty winter mould? The bathroom is the one spot in a home which can always do with a good clean - but poking around with bleach and rubber gloves isn’t anyone’s idea of a fun afternoon. Here are a few tips for cutting down on the time you have to spend scrubbing.

1. Unclog a tap with vinegar

Removing a dodgy showerhead or tap can be a bit of a pain and it’s just as effective to clean the filter while it’s still on! Just fill a plastic bag (or even a plain ziplock) with vinegar and fasten it around the outlet using a rubber hand. Leave it all night fully submerged and it should clear up right as rain.

2. Get creative with toilet cleaning

Alternatives to plain old bleach include mouthwash and vitamin C tablets - but for a super easy method which is easy on the skin, try a couple of baking-soda-based denture tablets in a container of water and using it with the toilet brush for a quick scrub.

3. Blast that pesky mould

One of the most neglected places is the bathroom ceiling - which is a shame, because thanks to poor ventilation systems and hot steamy showers, this part of the home is likely to be sporting at least a little grimy build-up. Mix equal parts water and vinegar and sponge it off before it gets too big for its boots.

4. Wash the shower curtain

Yes, yes, there are many ways to scrub down a curtain and remove all of its dirty smudges and mouldy stains, but they're nowhere near as quick and easy as popping it in the machine (sans clips, of course) and flicking on a gentle cold cycle.

5. The toothbrush trick

There’s nothing like a good old toothbrush for getting to those hard-to-reach grooves in tile grout. Another more unusual option is to use the eraser ends of new paser pencils. Using a simple soup solution, a store-bought product or your own mix of bleach and baking soda, these devices should help you clean the joins of floor and splashback tiles.
