Security intercom - buzzes but wont let me open front door for visitors.

My security entry phone, will buzz- like a door bell when people ring it. however, i am unable to let them into the building using the phone- it has stopped allowing this function to work. i took it off the wall to paint and i suspect that some wires inside have become loose/ broken.
