Replacement and new location of electric hot water service

Currently have a 250lt hot water service - very old - in our laundry. Want to get a new electric hot water service (no gas at our place - unless you can connect it up for us, we don't have a meter and the hot water service is at the back end of the property, so we think this would be the more expensive option) and move it outside (just on the other side of the same wall). Not sure if will replace with a smaller unit or same size - wondering if electric units are more efficient than they used to be?
