Gas smell from rinnai convector gas fire

I have a rinnai convector 506 gas fire. it has been stored inthe garage for 5-6 years unused but is in near new condition.
i now need house it in a new house. have just had a new gas outlet fitted for it. in a tv room about 3m x 3m and 3.1 m high. it heats the room really well but is givingout quite a strong smell. smells like kero or exhaust fumes. what i imagine the burntgas might smell like. worried it might be dangerous. is this smell normal? don't recall such a smell from ptrevious use. what might the smell be?
