Fix noisy, banging water pipes

We need to know why we have noisy water pipes, and what can be done to eliminate the noise.
Every morning, due to no apparent reason, the water pipe in our house starts banging. It is a regular pattern, it goes like:
bang, bang, bang, bang - noisy last bang and then a pause of several seconds, then the pattern repeats, over and over again.
It is very noisy in the bedroom and bathroom. The noise appears to come form the outside, or from the neighbour home, but when I go outside I cannot hear any noise.
Today I noticed that when I turn off the mains water valve, the noise stops. As soon as I turn mains on again, it starts again. I also installed a water hammer arrester, but this did not do anything.
