Change hotwater from electric to gas

This is for a strata with 4 units where all units currently have electric hotwater systems within the units located above washing machines. We would like to change this to gas hotwater. The unit already has gas fitted.
Also, it was reported a couple of years ago that tree roots are interfering with some pipes. We would like a check-up and report on this problem.
Smell of gas is quite apparent near the gas meters so would like a check-up on this too.
