I have a double fireplace with a Coonara-type heater in one room back-to-back with an unused open fireplace behind it in the other room. The Coonara is used only occasionally. Lately it has begun to let smoke out into the room whenever the door is opened to tend to the fire, so I assume the flue is partially blocked with creasote or whatever. The chimney is in the centre of the house rather than against an outside wall; viewed from inside it appears to be a traditional brick chimney, but from the outside the only thing poking through the roof is a metal flue.
