Residential vulcan gas heater not working

We have a c-x gas furnace model 9021/22 central heating unit in our house with a Chronogyr Rav91 heating control system. My father changed to batteries in the heating control panel and it caused us to not be able to turn the central heating off via the control panel. we had to manulally turn the heater off at the swith on the furnace unit outside. Then it all started to work ok for a couple of weeks and now we cannot turn the heating on at all. We dont believe it is the vulcan furnace unit but more of a problem with the control system . we are looking at having it repaired or replaced with something simple just to turn the heating on and off. not interested in timers onthe controls or anything like that. if someone can help us it would be great as we are freezing.
