Old Rennai gas heater needs repair

I have an old Rennai gas heater never seen it work but was left behind at the house we moved into. The heater tries to light as holding down the gas release and clicking the ingnite the heater will fire but the grids do not light up and on release of button will go to a very small flame untill i turn off. also has a gas smell so don't try too many times.
