Lennox in roof central heater needs service

Tried to use for first time in months over cold Melb week end. Will not ignite. Can hear unit trying to crank up but will not fire. Honeywell control box seems to be working normal.
Checked unit in ceiling and found does not have pilot for relighting -Lennox Elite series. Turned knob to off position (Honeywell VR8200) but can still smell a little gas after 20 minutes.
Am tempted to turn gas on again and re try starting unit - however, slight gas smell prevents me from doing this.
