Fix my thermostat?

Heater unit does not turn on. The heater (Lennox G24V)'s control thermostat "clicks" to signal the heater to turn on or off (in conjunction with "Heat On" message) but the heater does not respond. The heating unit does respond and turn on, except to "cool air only" (fan with no heater).
The batteries on the control thermostat have been replaced recently and there is no indication of a low battery message.
The gas hot water sytem and gas stove are both working fine, so do not susspect a gas supply issue.
The Heater unit (when triggered to heat on) starts a transformer within the main unit (can just be heard) but the system does not get as far as trying to (electrically) ignite any gas before shutting itself off again and ignoring the thermostat.
