Need to dig behind retaining wall

I have an existing retaining wall 800mm high and 9m long that is backfilled. I need to dig behind the entire length of the wall with 800mm deep in order to drain it properly and waterproof it. I am not sure but it may need to be digged by hand in order not to affect the retaining wall.
