Archos 7 wont turn off when powered down

I have an Archos 7 media player that does not power down when turned off. Previously when the device was shut down or put into standby, all indicator lights turned off, but now the red charge light comes on whenever this is done. Because the light is always on power discharges from the battery unless I disconnect the battery. It had a power spike whilst it was previously being charged.
