My laptop appears to have died suddenly

My initial screen was not loading properly and appeared to show some static. There is not a problem with the power cord. When I pressed the power button, I lost the screen and it is as if the computer is off. The power button no longer seems to work. Not good. Need to know if it can be repaired and that I can retrieve all information on there.
