Adrian requested 3 quotes from Carpenters in South Melbourne
Some of the weatherboards on both sides of our 2-storey house are damaged and need to be replaced.
LEFT HAND SIDE - On the left hand side (as you face the house from the street), the timbers have rotted a bit, which has caused the guttering to sink a few centimetres ... and this in turn has caused a roof leak.
The photos marked as "left side" were taken this morning by the plumber who had climbed up onto the roof to investigate the source of the roof leak. He recommended that we get the weatherboards replaced by a carpenter before we replace the guttering.
RIGHT HAND SIDE - The timbers on the right hand side also show a bit of damage, but it is not urgent to replace these.
TIMING OF THE JOB - We would like the timbers on the left side to be replaced as soon as possible (e.g. within the next week), so that the plumber can fix the leaking roof and the painter can then finish repairing and painting the house interior. There is no urgency to replace the timbers on the right hand side. However, if a carpenter is able to do both sides together for a better price than doing them individually, we would be happy to do both sides at the same time.

Appalling! The carpenter has simply vanished - abandoning the job and leaving us in the lurch two weeks before Xmas. \n\n\nMy initial impression of Chris (the business owner) and his staff was that they were pleasant and professional. The quote was mid way between the two other quotes, and the timing was right, so I accepted it. I\'d even planned to use them not just for this job, but for many larger jobs next year, and had recommended them to friends. \n\n\nOn 17 November Chris delivered the materials. The agreement was that I would arrange for priming and painting of the weatherboards over the next couple of weeks, and that Chris\'s carpenters would then return a few days later to remove the damaged boards along one side of the house and install the newly painted ones.\n\nAnd that was basically the last I heard from the company!\n\nSince late November I\'ve been trying to contact the company, but all to no avail ... they appear to have vanished from the face of the earth. The phone is never answered and there has been no response to my voice messages. Once I got a text message from Chris, saying he would call me that day ... but the call never came. All emails since late November have been completely ignored. \n\nThe consequences for us are significant, because all our follow-on jobs (such as fixing the box gutter) have now had to be put on indefinite hold - adding huge time and cost to the restoration project (especially at this time of year). Also, it now appears that Chris miscalculated the amount of weatherboards required ... which means that the the wrong lengths and wrong number of of weatherboards have been delivered (adding still further to my costs). \n\nIt\'s disappointing to be giving this company such a bad rating - because initially they seemed to be such nice guys and I\'d looked forward to working with them for years to come. However, if a company abandons a job without any sort of explanation, and if they won\'t even answer their phones for several weeks, then a very negative rating is my only option. ----- The response below is a patent misrepresentation of the facts. Metro claims that they had me "booked in for the 22nd & 23rd of Nov" and subsequently "moved the job twice". This is evidently not true. The date of 22 Nov was never mentioned, and I have been trying to contact them repeatedly since 28 Nov. There were only four working days between 23 and 28 Nov ... so clearly they cannot have moved a two-day job twice in four days! Their other comments (e.g. about painting the boards) are also inconsistent with earlier discussions. The fact remains that for twelve days - from 28 Nov to their response today - they did not answer my calls and did not respond to voicemails, texts or calls. For that whole period I have been trying to arrange installation ... but they have refused to communicate. The last time they communicated with me was on 17 Nov. If they have missed the opportunity to install my weatherboards before Xmas, it is because they have refused to communicate with me since late Nov.
