Remove deck post that blocks entrance of house

The entrance of my house has a small part (1.7x1.1m) of the deck that goes over it. It is supported by 3 posts at the front (the 1.7m side). I believe there are three posts because 2 form the uprights for the top of a set of stairs that lead to the deck, the third is a corner post of the deck. I want to remove the middle post (one of the ones forming the upright for the stairs).
From basic discussions with people with building experience in the past what needs to be done is to put a crosspiece between the two outer posts (to make up for lost support when the middle post goes), and to cut out the post. The bottom of the post has a steel bracket footing which would need to be cut off at concrete level. I apologise for wrong terminology, I am able to email photos if that would help.
