We are replacing our carpet in 2 weeks, but we have a buffet/hutch in the dining room (northern wall) which rattles badly when you walk in the room (floorboards run east/west), requiring floorboards to be taken up and joists repaired. we are not sure how pervasive the problem is - there may be other rooms where similar work needs to be done. we are on the upper floor of a 60-year-old double-brick duplex.
