Also known as dead finger and hand/arm vibration syndrome, Vibration White Finger (VWF) is an industrial injury that is usually caused by ongoing use of vibrating handheld tools.
It’s a secondary form of Reynaud’s Disease and affects the joints, nerves and muscles of the hand and wrist. As it’s name suggests it literally results in fingers going completely white as well as causing a loss of sensation or tingling in the affected areas.VWF is progressive, so it will start to manifest with a tingling sensation in your fingers.
Ongoing exposure to vibrating hand tools will escalate the condition to include white fingers and permanent nerve damage resulting total loss of sensation.Fortunately it usually takes prolonged exposure to vibrating power tools to cause VWF, but this is no reason not to follow basic health and safety guidelines while working on your home. All vibrating power tools will come with basic guidelines of how long they can safely be used for in one day (hours per day guides), regular breaks will also help.
