Wallpaper protection and maintenance

Once you've put your wallpaper up, keeping it protected and maintaining it is important. Wallpaper is meant to last longer than paint so proper protection and maintenance will keep your costs down.

  • To keep wallpaper protected from children still at crawling age, you can tape non-adhesive vinyl over the wallpaper.
  • To prevent splash and other marks on your wallpaper while you're cleaning skirting boards, doors and windows, your can protect the wallpaper with a venetian blind slat, a wide ruler, or a piece of hard plastic.
  • After you've finished applying the wallpaper, keep the spare wallpaper for wallpaper repairs and wallpaper patchwork.
  • Rather than keep the spare wallpaper protected, put in up in the attic or spare room so that it weathers similarly to the used paper. This way, repairs will look a lot more natural.
  • Rather than cut wallpaper for repair work, it is often better to tear the wallpaper, as this will make the repaired wallpaper work less visible.
  • You can use paint to touch up wallpaper repairs if the area is small enough. Just match the paint to the correct colour of the wallpaper.
  • Use a damp cloth to clean finger print marks off wallpaper. Then apply some Fuller's earth (or other non-plastic clay), let it dry and then brush off.
  • To erase pencil and other non greasy marks from paper (non-washable) wallpaper, you can use a soft pencil eraser. Alternatively, you can try a fresh slice of rye bread.
