Ventilation options for your home

Ventilation is an important part of keeping your home mildew and must free, as well as cutting down on mould, protecting your wood and prevents persistent damp. Ventilation is either opening windows, doors or skylights regularly, or by built in ventilation solutions.

Home ventilation

Exhaust fans suck out the moisture, smoke or small particles out of a room (usually kitchen or bathroom) and into the ceiling space or outside. Installing back draft shutters will keep insects out. Exhaust fans can be installed into ceilings or walls.

Dehumidifiers remove water from the air, and there are various types (including ones with carbon filters that also remove smells).

Air bricks are shaped like bricks but have wire meshing the centre that's set into the cement frame, letting air flow through wherever they are situated either to affect ventilation in the home itself, in the sub-floor or in the roof space (they can be installed into brick and weatherboard structures).

Sub-floor ventilation

Standard sub-floor ventilation systems look like a chimney (they run from floor to roof) and use a wind driven turbine system to create a vacuum that draws air out from the subfloor.

Some areas of the sub floor may have trapped, stale air that can create damp problems. Fan forced ducted systems prevent this by circulating fresh air through a network of ducting that has a fan in it.

Eco fans are low voltage fans that suck air out of the sub-floor which is then replaced by fresh air through wall vents.

Roof ventilation

Ventilation in your roof space is a great idea for all homes - they reduce the build up of heat in the roof space in summer, and in winter reduces condensation in the ceiling space. Whirlygigs (another name for the contraptions) save you on electricity bills and reduce moisture and chances of damp, plus they are inexpensive and easy and cheap to install.
