Sun safety - get ready for Summer!

Construction, landscapers, excavators and more - many of you work outside for a significant part of the day and need to protect yourself from the sun while you work.

As Australians, we grow up being surrounded by sun awareness - from our parents, schools and even friends. So of course we're all very aware of the dangers of too much sun and how we need to protect ourselves.

Tradies are more at risk of sun damage

Extra special care needs to be taken by people who have one or more of the following:

  • You're working outside from 10-2
  • You have fair skin
  • You work hard (strenuously) for periods of time outside
  • You work around shiny things like metal or mirrors or glass
  • Your machinery emits additional heat

Often, tradies automatically have one or more of those, so in the run up to Summer, make sure that your protective steps have been taken.

Protect yourself against the sun

  • Wearing long sleeves and trousers
  • Hats, sunglasses, etc
  • Sunblock - at least 15+ (you might as well go for more if you're going to apply it, after all)
  • Drink enough water and take breaks in the shade after periods of extreme exertion

Especially when you're working in a team, make sure that your team mates are taking as much care as possible too.

  • Great to see you getting the word out to tradies about sun safety! I ahve fair skin and a nasty family history of melanoma, so I shudder when I see shirtless tradies roasting in the heat of the day. Take care of yourselves tradies, and your kids too!
