Signwriting or signwriting? Two kinds?

At Service Central we've always used the term 'signwriting' for the profession where people write signs - signs for shops, billboards, internal messages, caution signs, directions, indexes etc. But signwriting also refers to a system of writing sign languages. It uses iconography and visual shapes (which are abstract pictures of hands, body and face) to convey a meaning or story.

We can only help find the first kind of signwriters, but were interested to find out this polyseme (fancy word for one word with two or more meanings).

Signwriting in the trades sense involves many different talents, usually dictated by the material the sign will be written in or on. A sign written on wood can be lettered with a stencil or carved and stained. Signs can also be digital and involve moving images or displays, be worked onto perspex or glass, be permanent or temporary, created on a vehicle or security shutter, and many more.

Signwriting is a very diverse industry, with many different companies offering different types of services. Some big companies will offer all services but often the smaller companies will stick to certain areas of speciality.
