As the temperature heats up here in Australia more and more homes are choosing to install an air conditioning system. However there are a variety of choices available on the market and it can be difficult to make the right decision. Asking an air conditioning expert for their advice is the best option, however you may not even be sure of what questions to ask.

What type of air conditioner should I get?

There are a variety of different air conditioners, each varying in price and ability. Depending on the size of your house, the climate you live in and how much of the house you want cooled your choice may vary considerably.

The options are:

  • Room air conditioners - suitable for single rooms
  • Portable air conditioners - suitable for spot cooling
  • Split Systems - quiet and effective at cooling large areas
  • Ducted air conditioning - cools the entire house

What size air conditioner do I need?

Using the correct sized air conditioner will save you considerably on energy use and in installation and running costs. An oversized air conditioning unit may also be less effective in summer, especially if the air is humid. The following is a list of what you will need to consider when making your selection.

  • How large are the rooms and what shape are they?
  • What the building is made of and how well insulated is it?
  • For room air conditioners, what direction (North, East, South or West) does the room face?
  • What is the ceiling height?
  • Positioning and size of windows?
  • What time of day the room is most likely to be in use (Night or Day)?
  • How many people use the room?

If you are aware of the output capacity of your air conditioner (the amount of heat that will be removed when cooling or added when heating) then, as a rule of thumb:

  • In living areas you will require 0.125kW - 0.140kW per square metre of floor area
  • In bedrooms you will require 0.080kW - 0.110kW per square metre of floor area

What features should my air conditioner have?

It's important to consider the following features when making your air conditioner selection:

  • How powerful is the cooling system?
  • Is it a quiet air conditioner?
  • Is there the option of multi-speed fans?
  • Can I change the direction of the air using vents?
  • Does it perform dehumidification?
  • Is it easy to clean the filters?
  • Does it have reverse cycle operation?
  • Is the thermostat automatic?

How can I judge my air conditioners energy efficiency?

With the introduction of the star rating system it is now quick and easy to judge which air conditioner is likely to perform better at being energy efficient. Your standard home air conditioning unit will have its energy efficiency rated on a scale of 1 to 6. Reverse cycle air conditioners (which can heat and cool) will display two star ratings - blue stars for cooling and red stars for heating. An energy efficient air conditioning unit will save energy and money, so when comparing different models make sure to take into account their star rating along with the features and size.
