Renovating the spare room: New carpet, dangling wires and girlie-fying

After the success of my bedroom renovation, I decided to tackle the spare room next. I might have somewhere nice to sleep but my guests were still roughing it in magnolia spare room, staring at the same ugly wardrobe that I’d ripped out of my room. I was starting to feel bad about it, especially as I was making everyone admire my new bedroom.

I cleared out the spare room and ripped up the carpet. As the room is much smaller than my bedroom, I didn’t bother with hiring a min skip this time round and just threw everything in the back of the van and took it to the tip.

Taking out the wardrobe was much easier than the ones in my room, presumably because I had some idea of how it was going to be constructed this time. I also had a fair idea of what I was going to find behind it. And I was right.

Things got better; under the wardrobe there was also a hole in the floor. When the room had been decorated last a section of the floorboards had been cut away (presumably to get access to the gas pipes underneath) and not replaced. The wardrobe had then been fitted over the hole. Truly inspired!

It got worse (as if this was possible) behind the fitted wardrobe was a double plug socket, with the wire hanging out of the wall an disappearing into a hole in the ceiling. I didn’t take photos of this little gem as I was too busy simultaneously shutting off the fuse box, gibbering in fear and calling my pet electrician.

When the electric nightmare had been removed and I could breathe again, I set about tackling the rest of the room. To be honest other than the hole in the floor and the bare brick behind the wardrobe, it was going to a fairly standard decorating job. I filled the hole in the floor with hardboard, cut to shape. The old cracked plaster was dealt with in much the same way as plastering in my room. My plastering skills are getting better, but they’re still nowhere near professional standard and I certainly wouldn’t want to be plastering anything that wasn’t going to be hidden behind a wardrobe.

The only thing that I struggled with was the wallpaper, which was a bit of a surprise as the last stuff I hung went up really easily. This lot stretched as soon as I put the wallpaper paste on it, the wall was really porous as well and the wallpaper didn’t move well on the wall. I threw quite a lot away and kicked the wall a good few times before I got the wall done.

I got my carpet fitter back, this time I didn’t book him until the room was completely decorated, and given the problems I had with hanging the wallpaper I’m really glad that I decided to wait before booking him in.

I’m really pleased with the finished room, it might be a little bit girly, but I don’t think it’s over the top.

At least none of my male friends who’ve slept in there have complained about it yet.
