When it comes to installing your synthetic lawn it is really best done in the hands of professionals who can measure the area, supply the turf and then install it. This is a guide for those interested in the process of laying an artificial lawn.
1. Clear the area
The area needs to be cleared of all weeds and grass - this may take some time as after the first round is done you may want to wait and check for any regrowth that needs to be sprayed. Once you are certain everything is dead it is a good idea to clear it all away, along with any big rocks or debris.
2. Level and compact the area
Next you will want to level and compact the cleared site. A light water followed by a vibrating plate compactor should create a nice solid, firm surface. It is important to consider drainage - synthetic grass will not absorb water, rather the water will run off like it would on concrete. Angling the surface slightly away from your house should be enough to prevent any pools forming on the surface. 3. Preparing the base
The base is comprised of various layers, first the earth, then fine stones then, if necessary, a layer of sand to add softness. Once the earth layer is completely dry and compacted the 5mm crushed rocks or crusher dust may be added and similarly compacted. The thickness of this stone layer will vary depending on the stability of the soil where you live. It is suggested you ask a professional's advice.
A fine layer of sand can then be added (only 2-5mm depth) to make the surface completely level and ensure that the stones won't be felt through the synthetic turf.
At this point you should also check for any depressions in the base surface. Anything that is deeper than 10-20mm should be filled in and that area levelled again.
4. Laying the artificial turf
Start by rolling out the turf and positioning it where you would like it to be. This is quite similar to laying carpet. Once the turf is positioned exactly where it needs to be you can trim the edges using a sharp knife. Be careful to ensure that the turf sits neatly on your prepared base.
The pieces of turf are now seamed together. Two edges of turf are glued together with a special outdoor turf adhesive and then joined with wide seaming tape. This process can actually be completed by a carpet layer, who would be familiar with the process, however for the best result it is suggested you hire a professional synthetic turf layer. Simply post a job with Service Central and we'll find a qualified, local synthetic turf layer for you.
5. Infilling
The intention of infilling is to weigh down the turf and help secure the fibres so as to avoid matting. Thin layers of granulated rubber and sand are applied in four stages, using a fertiliser or drop spreader. After each layer is spread it should be swept with a broom or lightly raked, ensuring the infill has been pushed down to the bottom of the fibre. Finally a power broom may be used to give that added, professional finishing touch.
6. Maintenance
It will take a few months for the infill to completely work its way down into the fibres, meaning that it may be 3 months until you see the synthetic lawn at its best. Once installed, the lawn will not need mowing or watering and is best cared for by brushing occasionally with a medium-soft bristled brush. Heavy brushing is not necessary and can have a detrimental effect.
Hi Im Lisa, from Rancho Santa Margarita, near Mission Viejo. I also want to add the benefit of Artificial grass, unlike natural grass that must be watered regularly, requiring costly sprinkler systems, artificial grass maintains itself with its internal drainage systems. Cities and school districts will also save money on water and power expenses, as well as conserving precious environmental resources. Artificial turf/grass has various texture or type to offer depending on the ideal condition for a certain place or location.
