The leader of the Federal Opposition, Tony Abbott, says a NSW proposal to raise electricity prices by an average of 16 per cent shows why the carbon tax should be axed. NSW's Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) released a draft report on Thursday that recommends an average electricity price hike of 16 per cent across New South Wales.
This could mean an additional $338 per year for households. For small business owners in city areas this could mean a $439 increase.
Highlighting the impact of the carbon tax, IPART said the carbon tax accounted for about half of the proposed increase from July 1.
Mr Abbott told reporters the rise was further evidence of how the carbon tax would threaten jobs and add to the cost of living. Specifically Mr Abbott was quoted as saying "I notice that we've just seen the announcement in NSW that power prices will go up by a average of 16 per cent on July 1," and “This is more evidence that the last thing this country needs now the world's biggest carbon tax."

I agree with you Charlie. But even though Service Central appear to be a mouthpiece of the Coalition at least SC is giving people ideas as to how they can be more energy efficient. Surely that is the whole point of government policy and why would energy efficiency be wrong? And let's not forget that indivuals are going to be reimbursed much of the additional costs involved. (which is electorally sensible but could be argued is counter productive in getting people to change their energy usage.)

Also, most of the reason for electricity prices going up is that state governments have failed to invest in infrastructure - now they have to make up for years of neglect by charging more. It's ridiculous that you're just reprinting Mr Abbott's opinions as though they're fact. -

I work for a company that do a complete power solutions we do solar and Led lighting and if your bill is over 2500 a month we can put it up for tender and a power saving device that works called a loop on voltage optimizer all this can fix your bill all together or reduce it by heaps.

I think that the Labour Parfty energy spokedsman deserfves a right of reply and I agree with Sarah that the maitneance of infrastructue is the main reason for the price increases. The Carbon Tax will not inconvenience low income earners as they will receive a cash rebate.
Where is the Gillard hate press coming from ( mostly the supporfters of big pollution). Look at how many bills she has got through for her supporters ( and that's who she represents). When have Abbott and Hockey ever put up a firm proposal. The are full f obstification. Start thinking what can I do for my country,not what can my country do for me and take a little pain. A synagogue should be apolytical, or at least take a more balancved apprfoach. For the record, I am a swinging voter.
