Pest control: Preventing termites

Termites are a significant pest in Australia - damaging more homes than fire every year. How do you prevent termite infestation? Here are the highlights:

  • Avoid wooden structures, instead use steel or brick. Not always practical but if you're in a susceptible area a good idea to consider before you build.
  • Barriers of soil that has been poisoned can be used around susceptible structures. These barriers can be created by trenching or drilling holes into the ground for the poison.
  • Some timbers are naturally resistant to termites like the White Cypress and Turpentine Tree - but remember the keyword here is resistant, not fool proof.

The best way to prevent termite infestation is to get an expert to come and have a look. Be proactive and have a termite inspection every 12 months (or more frequently if you're in a high risk area).
