October was a massive jobs month

As we get to work after the Melbourne Cup weekend, I can confirm that October was most definitely a massive jobs month.

In fact, it was our biggest job month since January 2011, and our second biggest month since November 2009.

All up in October there were 4171 jobs posted with Service Central.

Of these there were:

  • 2870 jobs in Victoria with a fill rate of 71%
  • 674 jobs in NSW with a fill rate of just 24%
  • 418 jobs in Queensland with a very low fill rate of 16%
  • 97 jobs in WA and a fill rate of 11%
  • 65 jobs in South Australia and a fill rate of 2% (yes, just 2%)
In this massive jobs month there were a number of very strong services including:

  • 138 Air Conditioning Jobs - up from 84 last month.
  • 225 Appliance Repairs jobs with just a 21% fill rate
  • 68 brick laying jobs with just 42% fill rate
  • 100 building jobs
  • 97 cabinet making jobs with just 29% fill rate
  • 202 carpentry jobs
  • 169 concreting jobs
  • 314 electricians jobs
  • 204 fencing jobs with just a 38% fill rate
  • 100 gardening jobs
  • 278 handyman jobs
  • 136 landscaping jobs
  • 153 painting jobs --> our biggest month for painting since October 2008!
  • 101 plastering jobs
  • 394 plumbing jobs --> our biggest category for the month
  • 92 tiling jobs --> our biggest tiling month since November 2009.
Its fantastic to see this growth. No doubt the work that the IT Team have done on redesigning the Get Quotes form and the Website has been great in converting more visitors to jobs. Great work guys! I'm sure that the advertising on the radio has also helped as well. Interestingly, this was a month where I was too busy to get many newsletters written and sent out, so we would have had even more jobs come through if we'd been sending regular newsletters as well.

As you can see, however, there is very much room for improvement. In particular:

  • The fill rate in every state except Victoria is unacceptable.
  • 21% fill rate in Appliance Repairs is awful.
  • 38% fill rate in Fencing is very poor as well.
We ask that everyone focus on what can be done to bring us closer to a fill rate of 70% or more across all of Australia. Currently we're sitting at just 55%.
