Microsoft worried that businesses are now using Google Docs

Concerned that more and more businesses are moving to Google Docs, Microsoft have put out this rather amusing ad highlighting why people should stay with Microsoft Office.

More and more businesses are moving away from the expensive Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc) to the free (or extremely cheap) Google alternative: Google Docs (gmail, google document, google spreadsheet, etc).

To attack the growth of Google docs, Microsoft have put a great amount of effort into producing this video. It is aimed at scaring people away from Google, however it might be Microsoft that is left with egg on its face.

Have a look and let us know your thoughts:

If you or your business would like to use Google's free Google Docs service, head to the Google Docs website and check it out.

We are a big user of Google's email and document services and would fully recommend them to others.

  • Thats a very very very.......... lame ad by microsoft. Mircosoft should get their money back from the ad agency that created this ad. Yes they highlighted the issues with google docs....but seriously i cannot believe that this was the best way to represent it. Also using microsoft or google docs totally depends on what sort of company you have and what you want to use docs/spreadsheets for. VBA (macros) are great for microsoft office and it creates a lot of efficiency whereas in google docs you cannot do that. Thats just one of the many differences, however it comes down not only to what you want to use it for but also what you are paying for? Microsoft now has started to really come down on prices to keep customers, so it might be the right time to get the office suite.
Coming back to the ad, it sucks!

  • More and more, documents are assembled from information stored in logical places rather than created and maintained as standalone documents. Text may come from an XML structure so web output doesn't mean conversion from Word, tabular data may be extracted from a database and organised to suit the audience or document, etc.

Microsoft needn't worry so much about Google Docs as about the fact that their idea of a document is quickly becoming irrelevant. The ad shows just how far out of touch they are - they don't even know who the enemy is yet. Start digging a hole...

  • I have used Microsoft Office for years and find it great! (no I do not work for Microsoft!). And who would use software from Apple and Google that tracks your every move. I want nothing to do with those Big Brothers. And ethically at least Gates is a generous philanthropist. What did Jobs or Schmidt do expect build up ever bigger piles of money.

  • Instead of putting so much effort into producing a video, what about reducing the price of Microsoft Office, which I don't have at home exactly because of its cost. Why should we pay for something that we can have for free or very cheap?!
