There’s nothing wrong with a little bit of sun - after all, an outdoor barbie is our national pastime. But without careful care and preparation, even the most lucious of gardens can easily descend into a haze of dust, dead grass and dog poo. Here are a few simple tips for getting ready for summer.
1. Don’t skimp on the spring cleaning
Over winter backyards tend to accumulate an awful lot of leaf litter, like sticks and rotting leaves. Partly solidified in the rain, this unwanted garden waste dries out over spring and can provide both a helping hand to grass fires and home for roaming reptiles. Use a rake and wheelbarrow to clear the debris and check the level of actual weeding required.

2. Change your watering habits
If you keep flowerbeds or other plant life which requires regular sustenance, remember to get into the habit of dawn and dusk watering. These are the coolest times of day and will give the roots a fighting chance to absorb the moisture before it evaporates in the heat. Many people opt for an automatic sprinkler system, designed to both save water and be programmable to maximise water uptake.

3. Max out on the shade
Time to accessorise. There’s no point getting into outdoor entertaining if everyone’s going to get burnt to a crisp so be creative with providing shady spots in your yard. If you’re lucky, a nice canopy of trees can do the trick, but for sun protection on a patio try an umbrella or a sun sail.
