Laminate flooring or cabinets - what comes first?

So. You're putting new laminate flooring into your kitchen but your kitchen cabinets are already there. Do you take the cabinets out and rebuild the bottoms when the flooring is in, or not?

According to our expert cabinet makers and flooring specialists, the answer is no. The cabinets should be installed first and the laminate flooring should be placed a 5-10 centimetres away from the cabinet. The gap should then be covered with a small moulding.

But why? Interestingly enough, laminate flooring is filled with melamine resins (which makes it scuff and scratch resistant). The laminate flooring has a core of particle board, and particle board can be sensitive to humidity and moisture. So, if you install the flooring under the cabinets you risk the floor swelling and skewing your cabinets. But, if you leave space between the flooring and the cabinet, there is enough space for expansion without damage to your cabinets.
