Insulation Rebate slashed by 25%

The Australian government has slashed the home insulation rebate by 25 percent. Environment Minister Peter Garrett announced that he would reduce the maximum home insulation rebate from $1600 to $1200 effective immediately.

The $3.9 billion home insulation program was brought in by the Rudd Government as part of its multi-billion dollar economic stimulus package to save Australia from a recession being brought on by the Global Financial Crisis.

The free home insulation rebate has been extremely popular with over 500,000 households having already taken up the offer. This has helped those householders increase their homes comfort, whilst reducing the cost of heating and cooling their homes. The home insulation program has also successfully created thousands of jobs for Australians during these tough times.

The opposition, however, has been critical of the program. Attacking the home insulation rebates, along with other economic stimulus initiatives, as excessive expenditure by the government. This criticism has been growing in strength as the economy improves and a recession is no longer likely.

To reduce the pressure from the opposition the Government has slashed the home insulation rebate from a maximum of $1600 per household to $1200 per household. This will have the effect of reducing the program's overall budget by $250 million. There is concern that the opposition will continue its push to have this program slashed completely with opposition environment spokesperson Greg Hunt already eluding to just that.
