Improving home safety: Timer or sensor lights

If intruders are watching your home, they look for 'signs of life' inside. Noise, being able to see people moving about, and lights are all signs of life.

And before you get all 'Home Alone' and hook up a system of dolls to throw human-like shadows everywhere, think simply about having a sensor light (to pick up movement outside the house) and your internal lights on a timer. Timers plug into the wall, you set the time the light should go on or off (like the timer on a heater), and on/off goes the light - mimicking human activity.

Even if you're not going away, if you're coming home in the dark around the same time every night, setting a timer inside to light up before you get there is not a terrible idea. Firstly, it gives the impression you're not arriving home alone, and secondly gives you a bit more light when you get into the house! Of course, no one likes to waste electricity but sometimes safety is more important.
