Household waste can accumulate during the course of normal life, or it can be as a result of a renovation, new driveway or new fence. One of the most difficult things about DIY is rubbish removal - because unless you have a ute, getting rubbish to the tip can be troublesome. Rent a skip for a week or more, fill it up, and watch it being taken away.
Skips are measured in cubic metres from 2.5 cubic metres to around 30 cubic metres. A cubic metre is 1m high x 1m wide x 1m deep - a filled standard box trailer is approximately one cubic metre.
Most skip rentals will be for a week, but you can also request drop off and pick up dates specifically.
What kinds of things can you put in the skip?
Different companies will have different rules, but essentially all you have to think about is the disposal of the contents. Here are some types of bins:
- General Waste
Most general household waste. You can also mix green waste but no bricks or concrete allowed.
- Bricks and Concrete
Only bricks and concrete are allowed. This rubbish goes to a special disposal facility and can't be mixed. If you have more than concrete and bricks then choose a 'heavy waste' bin.
- Recyclables
Recyclable plastics, cardboard, glass and metal and no other types of waste must be included.
- Heavy Waste
A 'general' waste bin that allows bricks and concrete.
- Green Waste
Garden rubbish - grass clippings, branches, woodchips and bark
What can't you put in bins
Usually, asbestos products aren't allowed. Sometimes paint cans, old chemical bottles etc are allowed, sometimes not. Check with the company you rent the skip from before ordering it.
