Fly like a Bird

There are plenty of flying robots, but none that do it quite like this. Watch as Markus Fischer demonstrates his incredible robot bird.

For as long as we can remember, birds have inspired us to dream of flying. Today we can and do, but not quite in the way that a bird flies.

Markus Fischer made it his aim to design a robot that flew like a bird and has succeeded! The lightweight robot bird is a feat of aeroengineering. Watch as it flaps its wings and flies above the audience throughout the theatre.

Despite a wingspan of 2 metres the bird only weighs only 450g, thanks to its intelligent design and the use of carbon fibre throughout. A simple motor in the centre of the body controls the wing movement and by separating each wing into two parts they are able to make finer motion controls.

Watch the video below to see this incredible bird in flight and learn more about its design and construction.
