Easy kitchen tweaks: Retro-fitting for perfection

If you have a kitchen that's relatively new but is missing that special touch, think about these ideas to retro fit to your kitchen and take it to a whole new level! These days a whole new kitchen is nice to think about, but if the existing one is 'good enough' you may have other renovation ideas that take priority. But that doesn't mean you have to ignore your kitchen altogether - check out these great ideas to retrofit to your kitchen. Small ideas, big effect!

Soft touch or soft closing hinges

A feature of most new kitchens today is soft touch kitchen cabinets and drawers. If you haven't experienced them, soft close kitchens have a special hinge that slows down the speed at which the drawer or cabinet is being closed at, and slowly closes it using various technologies. The remove the noise of slamming cabinets, preserve the integrity of your cabinets and create less vibration (we've all heard that noise of items in the cupboard shifting after you slam it shut!).

Retrofitting soft touch hinges to your existing kitchen can be done by any carpenter or cabinet maker - even some by an experienced DIY-er or handyman. The job involves replacing the standard hinges with soft touch hinges.

Replace a cupboard with a drawer

New kitchens these days have changed the two standard cabinet types - so it's no longer only a choice between one cupboard with two shelves or 4 drawers. You can also choose a cupboard size drawer, and have trays in the drawer at different levels. The benefits of this is that you don't have to scrabble around on your knees trying to get the cans from the back out - and you can immediately see what's in the drawer when you pull it out.

Retrofitting a drawer into a cupboard space should be simple enough but will need an experienced cabinet maker unless you're adding a drawer in an originally flat packed kitchen.

Hang your utensils or pots

Installing a rack for hanging utensils off under your upper cabinets can be a great space saver AND add aesthetic appeal. Racks can also hang pots and pans, and options that are suspended from the ceiling (over a breakfast bar or centre island) can bring great charm and convenience to a kitchen without much effort.

Replace a cupboard with a rubbish cupboard

Concealing your rubbish bin is one of the better ideas that new kitchen designers have had. Not only do you conceal the bin and reduce untidiness, but it often makes cleaning while you cook easier.

Build in a compost box

Now we're not talking about creating a compost heap in your kitchen (although we're sure there are options like that) but if you do have a compost heap you'll know how untidy and dirty the place you temporarily keep compost waste in can be. Building a smaller receptacle into the counter (perhaps over the bin or with a drawer) can be retrofitted and make composting more convenient and less unattractive.
