Size does matter: How big is your
bathroom?
The first and the most important factor is to figure out the size and area of your bathroom. Calculate the floor space and square footage. If you are interested in renovating only the walls, it’s a nice idea to also get an accurate measure of the wall space. Knowing the space you want to renovate will determine the precise amount of material you will be required to buy. Pen down your findings on a paper or store them in your phone as numbers can be easily forgotten. If you need to make a guess on any measurement, be sure that you err towards the higher side.
Choice of materials
Now that you have a good measure of the space that you’ll be working with, it is time to choose the right materials for your renovation. The market is loaded with a variety of different materials and you will need to choose the one that fits in your budget as well as style. This is where you get to be creative too. You can try mixing in some expensive items with some cheaper ones. Like, an expensive countertop can be put in an inexpensive cabinet and you could choose simple ceramic tiles over the expensive hand painted ceramic tiles to reduce the costs. You can opt in either for a complete tile shower wall option, a total body shower wall alternative, or a beadboard wainscoting solution provided you want to get rid of the tiles for good.
Fixtures
Bathroom fixtures can turn out to be the most costly of all the items in the context of bathroom repairs. If you choose to keep the same flooring, you can save some money on the plumbing. The price of fixtures varies over a wide range. A standard white toilet can lead to a spending of about $125, whereas luxury fixtures can lead to a dent in your pocket for as much as around $3000 per item. The budget constraints would obviously govern the final selection of the fixture.
Involved labor
Labor will be required for removing the old bathroom and installing the new one. Removing old ceramic tiles, fixtures, bathtub, ceiling etc is a tough job and it will cost you quite a lot of money provided you hire someone professional and licenced to do it. Why not make it a do it yourself project, provided you have enough spare time, the required tools and are sure that you will not ruin anything during the removal. It is however recommended that you hire the services of an expert for proper installation of new items. A professional will also be able to take care of stuff such as holes, leakage and electricity issue. Some research, careful planning and a pinch of creativity on your part can lead to an amazingly renovated bathroom.
